In the Thursday, Nov. 17 matchup against Campbell University, the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team suffered a 59-41 loss off of 31 turnovers in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Senior Blaire Houston finished with her first double-figure outing of the season with 12 points, while junior Chasidy Williams concluded the contest with 10 points.  Williams pulled down five boards, distributed two assists and stole four CU possessions.

NCCU saw a lead in the early minutes of the contest, but after the 15:25 mark, Campbell owned the hardwood. 

Lady Camel Jasmine Cooper, who finished with 14 points and caused a great deal trouble in the paint, paced the squad on their first run of the night.  With an 8-1offensive swell over seven minutes of play,

Campbell took a seven-point lead for a score of 16-7.
Maroon and gray starter Lakisha Evans netted a jumper at the 7:56 mark to snap the run.  Houston, who went 9-for-12 from the free-throw line, assisted in chiseling away at the lead with three consecutive free throws for a score of 12-16 at the 5:55 mark.

In the final five minutes of the half, Campbell paced on yet another strong lead, this time creating the largest margin of the half off an 11-3 run for score of 27-15.

The mighty maroon returned to the court after the halftime intermission with a 12-point deficit to bounce back from.

While Cooper continued to be a threat in the paint, Tonisha Baker, who finished as the second leading Lady Camel scorer with 13 points, created trouble for NCCU below the three-point arc.  At the 17:03 mark, Baker sinked a jumper and followed up with a layup at the 16:31 mark to increase the margin to 16 points for a score of 35-19.

After taking a 30-second timeout, junior J’Mia Pollock initiated an 8-2 run at the 16:31 mark to snap the Lady Camels lead in half for a score of 37-29.

Nonetheless, Campbell refused to relinquish its dominance, leading by as many as 23 points, until taking a final 18-point 59-41 victory over NCCU.

As Cooper and Baker paced the offense, Katelyn Bass and Roslyn Presley grabbed five rebounds apiece, while Baker lobbed five assists and Cooper block two shots.  Baker and Amanda O’Neill stole five
possessions apiece for Campbell.

By the numbers, NCCU finished at 30 percent from the field on 15-of-50 shooting, 20 percent from the long range, and 67 percent from the charity stripe, 10-of-15.  Collectively, the Lady Eagles pulled down 40 rebounds, circulated six assists, blocked five shots and stole 10 CU possessions.

Campbell seized the win on 39 percent from the field on 26-of-66, 13 percent from behind the arc, and 55 percent from the free-throw line, 6-of-11.  Cooperatively, the Lady Camels also grabbed 40 rebounds, while distributing 16 assists, blocking three shots and stealing 18 NCCU possessions.

On the season, the maroon and gray drops to 0-3, while Campbell advances to 2-0 and 10-2 in the series.

The Lady Eagles return to action on Sunday, Nov. 20 for a 2:00 p.m. matchup against West Virginia in Morganton, W. Va.
