27 NCCU turnovers force road loss

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University began Monday night’s contest going point-for-point with North Carolina A&T State, until 27 turnovers forced the maroon and grey to an 85-49 loss to the Aggies on Jan. 24 in Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro, N.C.
 
From the tipoff to the 3:50 mark, the Lady Eagles kept the Aggies to a maximum seven-point margin. N.C. A&T State senior Reisha Bullock hit her only three-pointer of the contest to pace the host team on an 8-5 run, for a 10-point lead at the half, 34-24.
 
Following the halftime intermission, the Aggies continued to flourish from their first half surge. Within the first 10 minutes of play, the blue and gold went on a 27-12 run for a score of 63-36.
 
Freshman Alesha Jenkins stole an Aggie possession in host territory and drove to the rim sinking a two-point jumper at the 8:02 mark, bringing NCCU to its closest deficit of the half, 67-40.
 
N.C. A&T State scoring leader Jaquayla Berry, who led with 27 points, quickly answered back to Jenkins steal pacing the home team to their 36-point win.
 
NCCU senior Jori Nwachukwu netted 17 points in the loss, while falling one rebound short of a double-double. The forward seized nine rebounds. Sophomore J’Mia Pollock led the rebounding game for the Lady Eagles with 10 rebounds. Chasidy Williams and Blaire Houston contributed to the offensive campaign with 16 combined points. Williams scored nine points, as Houston earned seven points.
 
Collectively, NCCU grabbed 40 rebounds, forced 11 Aggie turnovers, blocked three shots and stole three possessions. The Lady Eagles hit 37 percent from the field and 55 percent from the free-throw line.
 
In conjunction with Berry’s 27-point outing, two N.C. A&T State student-athletes scored in double-figures. Mikala Scott netted 15 points, while Nikia Gorham obtained a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Bullock commanded the offense with nine assists. Berry obtained five additional possessions for the Aggies, with five steals.
 
As a unit, N.C. A&T State pulled down 51 rebounds, forced 27 NCCU turnovers and stole 18 Lady Eagle possessions. The Aggies scored 41 percent from the field, 29 percent from the long range and 61 percent from the charity stripe.
 
On the season, NCCU drops to 2-17, while N.C. A&T State advances to 8-9.
 
The Lady Eagles will enjoy a two-game homestead, hosting Florida A&M on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. and Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.
