DURHAM, N.C. (NCCUEaglePride.com)- Eight runs in the first two innings, 11 in the first four, and a smattering of eight hits found the North Carolina Central baseball team behind the eight ball from the get-go against crosstown rival Duke University on the way to an 11-2 loss on Wednesday night at the Durham Athletic Park.
In the seventh meeting between the two, Duke jumped out in front thanks to a three-run home run by Jake Lemmerman after junior lefty Brandon Oatis (Matthews, N.C.) walked the game's first two batters. The Blue Devils added another run to take a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
In the bottom of the first, a Kurt Wilson (Riverdale, Ga.) single and stolen base moving him into scoring position followed by a Blake Murray (Wendell, N.C.) walk, allowed the Diamond Eagles to strike back when Derrell Parker hit an RBI single up the middle giving him 10 RBIs on the season and putting the Eagles on the board trailing 4-1.
The Blue Devils added four more onto the scoreboard in the top of the second inning on four runs on two hits including an RBI double by Will Pwinica Worms to widen the margin to 8-1 after two innings.
The final three runs in the fourth inning with Duke's Jeremy Gould who hit a solo home run to begin the frame. NCCU committed two errors and allowed Duke to take an 11-1 lead after four innings.
In a ballgame where the Eagles left 10 runners stranded, Murray added the final run of the contest with his first home run of the season, putting the score at 11-2 in the eighth inning.
The Diamond Eagles were held to eight hits, as were the Blue Devils but Duke was helped out by four errors courtesy the NCCU defense.
Only one Eagle managed multiple hits in the game with Kurt Wilson going 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss.
NCCU (0-24) heads down south this weekend to take on newly named MEAC member, Savannah State University, down in Savannah, Ga. for a three-game set beginning with doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
