PANTHERSVILLE, GA. (NCCUEaglePride.com)- The North Carolina Central University baseball team allowed runs in all but one inning after scoring the games' first against Georgia State University, dropping a 32-3 decision to the Panthers in game one of a four-game set on Friday night at The Field at Panthersville in Atlanta, Ga.
The Eagles jumped out quickly in the top of the first with back-to-back base hits by leadoff batter Akeem Hood and Georgia native, Kurt Wilson (Riverdale, Ga.), to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a Nate Smith (Knightdale, N.C.) strikeout Blake Murray singled up the middle to drive in the first run of the contest putting the Eagles on top 1-0. Junior rightfielder Edward Pegues (Laurinburg, N.C.) walked to load the bases unfortunately for NCCU sophomore leftfielder Ross Plummer grounded into an inning-ending double play to get the Panthers out of jam.
Georgia State took full control from there scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first, two runs in the second, seven in the third, and four in the fourth to grab a 21-1 lead after four complete innings.
The Eagles scored a run in the sixth and in the eighth, while Georgia State added 11 more runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to put the game at its final tally.
NCCU was charged with nine errors, and left eight runners on base on the night. GSU righty David Buchanan struck out a season-high ten batters to keep the Eagle bats at bay.
Leading the way for the Panthers, centerfielder Mark Mickowski went an astounding 7-for-8 at the plate scoring four runs and complied seven RBIs, not to mention hitting for the cycle in the first win of the season for Georgia State.
One highlight for NCCU, Murray raised his average .100 points with his 2-for-3 with a run scored and his first RBI of the season.
