DURHAM, N.C. - Despite harsh winds and spots of rain, the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team attained another win. The Eagles beat the Rams of Winston-Salem State, 5-2 on the NCCU Tennis Courts.
The Eagles began the match with a sensational doubles play sweep. NCCU senior Kateryna Chorna and freshman Olesya Palko opened doubles play with an 8-2 win over Sloane Holmes and Bianka Locklear.
Winston-Salem States's Kayla Carter and Kalin Jarvis suffered an 8-3 loss to sophomore Cameron Chatman and junior Tatiana Velasquez. Eagles' seniors Maria Medina and Ashley McRae closed out doubles play with an 8-2 victory over Johanna Nunez and Chelsea Chatman.
"The Medina and McRae duo earned a convincing doubles win," said NCCU head coach David Nass. "Special credit goes to McRae who earned her first Division I win, which also brought us the doubles point."
By the end of singles play, the Eagles obtain four wins, enough to take the match win.
NCCU's Palko served Holmes a second loss, taking the match, 6-2, 6-0. Chatman overpowered Carter, who she faced in doubles play, 6-0, 6-3.
Eagles senior Kateryna Chorna attained a 6-3, 6-3 win over Locklear. Velasquez closed out the match for the Eagles, beating Nunez, 6-2, 6-3.
The Eagles advance their record to 8-9.
NCCU looks to obtain their ninth win of the season Friday, April 2 against Longwood at the Cary Tennis Center, set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
