RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina Central University women's tennis enjoyed sunny 70 degree weather and 7-0 victory against Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.
"This match win was essential to gauging our development," said NCCU head coach David Nass. "It provided a test for us to be able to change our `hard-hitting' style of play to a more controlled, placement emphasis."
That "controlled, placement emphasis" was definitely apparent during doubles play, as the Eagles earned two of the three doubles play wins. No. 1 doubles team senior Kateryna Chorna and freshman Oleysa Palko defeated Kathryn Maples and Ashley Pearsall, 8-5. No. 2 doubles team sophomore Cameron Chatman and junior Ashley Rogers beat Alison Flanagan and Betty Edwards, 8-3.
"All six of our players made the adjustment and took control of their respective singles match," said Nass.
Eagles began singles play with Chorna defeating Maples, 6-0, 6-3. NCCU's Palko overpowered Pearsall for second time of the day, 6-3, 6-1. For her sixth consecutive singles win, Chatman beat Casey Collins, 6-0, 6-1.
Eagles' Rogers beat Flanagan for the second time as well, earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
"Rogers showed very good shot selection to out-position her opponent repeatedly for the win," said Nass.
NCCU junior Tatiana Velasquez beat Molly Parks, 6-1, 6-1.
Rounding out singles play for the Eagles was senior Monica Medina. Medina earned an outstanding, 6-0, 6-0 over Zannah Webster. "I was very impressed with Medina's serves and forehand shots today," said Nass.
Catch the Eagles back in action Tuesday, March 23 as the women's and men's tennis teams take on the Bears of Morgan State, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
