GLEN BURNIE, Md. (NCCUEaglePride.com)- The North Carolina Central University baseball team let a 5-1 lead slip away against Coppin State University as the host Eagles cameback to take the first contest of the three-game set 11-5 on Friday afternoon at the Bachman Sports Complex in Glen Burnie, Md.
NCCU had as many hits as runners left on base in the loss, but the visiting Eagles jumped out in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Akeem Hood (Raleigh, N.C.) scored on a wild pitch to grab the early lead.
The Eagles stretched the advantage out to 5-0 following a 4 run-inning that included four Eagle hits. The highlight of the frame came when Ross Plummer (Winston-Salem, N.C.) hit his second double of the season driving in both Justin Goodson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and David Scott (Bunn, N.C.) both of which recorded hits in the inning as NCCU took a 5-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning. Plummer is now hitting .350 (7-for-20) on the season with two doubles and four RBIs.
Coppin State took control from there scoring in five of the last six innings including three runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to snatch back a lead they never relinquished in the 11-5 win.
In the fifth inning, CSU recorded back-to-back doubles that drove in four of the five runs with two outs in the frame.
NCCU left a combined five of the nine runners on base down the stretch in the seventh, eighth, and ninth inning to fall short in the comeback.
Glenn Frye (0-3) took the loss for the visiting Eagles after allowing five earned runs in 4.2 innings and recorded a season-high four strikeouts. Coppin State grabs the series lead at 3-2.
NCCU (0-16) will look to even the series up on Saturday afternoon in doubleheader action beginning with a noon first pitch at the Bachman Sports Complex. Game two is set to start at approximately 3:00 p.m.
