DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University men's tennis team gave an excellent performance Saturday, March 13 against Hampton on the NCCU tennis courts. Unfortunately for the Eagles, their effort was not enough to subdue the Pirates.

NCCU's No. 1 sophomore Jack Waissen opened singles play in a heated match against Nelio Mattos. Mattos defeated Waissen, 7-5, 6-4.

Eagles' No. 2 sophomore Alejandro Espita overthrew Kenneth Green, 6-2, 6-2. Regrettably for NCCU, No. 3 Jose Fabara's passionate play would not be enough to defeat Gellert Varga, who took the match 6-0, 6-1.

For the Eagles' second singles win junior Trey Chatman defeated Edson Alves, 6-3, 6-1.

NCCU closed out singles play on a somber note. Eagles' No. 5 Bryan Jackson lost to Alvin Fludd, 6-1, 6-2 and No. 6 Stephen Allsop fell to Marcelo Reda, 6-1, 6-3.

The Eagles improved their match record during doubles play, taking two of the three games.

As the NCCU No. 1 doubles team, Waissen and Chatman came together to defeat Mattos and Varga, 8-6. No. 2 Espitia and Fabara joined forces beating Greene and Reda, 8-3.

Come out and support the Eagles as they take on the Bears of Morgan State Tuesday, March 23 at the Cary Indoor Tennis Center scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
