DURHAM, N.C. (NCCUEaglePride.com)- The North Carolina Central University baseball team was held to four hits and stranded six runners on base, including a bases loaded threat in the bottom of the third inning, while Davidson scored run in seven of the nine innings to run away with a 16-2 win on Tuesday afternoon at the historic Durham Athletic Park.
The Wildcats got on the board first in the top of the first inning thanks to a Zach Gadairie RBI single and an Eagle throwing error that aided in giving Davidson the 2-0 early lead.
For the fourth straight contest the visiting team broke the game open in the top of the third inning when the Wildcat offense put up four more runs on two extra base hits to vault Davidson to the 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
NCCU tried its best to get the offense revved up in the bottom of the third as sophomore Akeem Hood (Raleigh, N.C.) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single that drove in sophomore backstop Etienne Farquharson (Inagua, Bahamas) to get Eagles on the board down 6-1. NCCU loaded the bases with two outs and unfortunately could not get that timely hit managing just one run in the frame.
The game stood at 6-1 until the top of the fifth when the Davidson offense erupted scoring runs in the last five innings of the contest to put the score at its final resting place at 16-2.
Freshman hurler Jasper Jones (Hookerton, N.C.) had his debut cut short to just 2.1 innings but he showed a lot of promise as better days lie ahead of the rookie here at NCCU.
On a bright note, junior outfielder Edward Pegues had two hits on the day including a double, his first of the season.
NCCU (0-4) has the weekend off and will next face the Lancers of Longwood University on Tuesday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park.
