Feb. 16, 2010

DURHAM, N.C. (NCCUEaglePride.com) - North Carolina Central University men's basketball junior C.J. Wilkerson has been chosen as the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for January 2010, sponsored by The Banks Law Firm.

The Oxford, N.C. native excelled through a brutal month of January for the men's basketball team, conquering a schedule that included in-state foes East Carolina, High Point, and NC State. Not to be forgotten, the Eagles also faced Virginia Tech, Colgate, and SMU to highlight a very difficult month. Through all that, Wilkerson proved to be the one constant for head coach LeVelle Moton.

In 10 games throughout the month of January, the junior scored in double figures seven times, which included three 20-plus point performances with a career-high 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting against Newport News Apprentice School on Jan. 16. He was also named M.V.P. of the 2010 B.C. Powder Classic because of his 53 total points, which included a perfect 10-for-10 at the charity stripe and a scorching 5-for-9 (55.6 percent) from three-point range.

In the entire month of January, Wilkerson was held to single digits only three times, and led the team with an average of 15.7 points per game. He also missed just 12 free throws in those 10 games going 42-for-54 at the line. The junior also shot a tremendous 43.6 percent from behind-the-arc (17-for-39).

To further focus in on his performance in the month of January, Wilkerson averaged 37.4 minutes per contest. He played more than 38 minutes in seven of the 10 contests, including playing the entire 45 minutes in the overtime loss at Savannah State.
