Final Stats
DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team picked up their first two wins of the season on Sunday (Feb. 14) defeating both Winston-Salem State and Shaw at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on the Duke campus in Durham, N.C.
"It was a long day but when the dust settled the Eagles came out victorious in Sunday's doubleheader," said NCCU head coach D. Curtis Lawson.
N.C. Central 6, Winston-Salem State 1
The Eagles began their evening of triumph sweeping Winston-Salem State 6-1. NCCU took a 1-0 advantage following doubles play.
Eagles' sophomore Jack Waissen teamed up with sophomore Alejandro Espitia to defeat Brian Coxton and Ian Hunter (8-6). NCCU senior Bryan Jackson and junior Trey Chatman destroyed Troy Moore and Joab Odera (8-0). Rounding out the assertive doubles play were teammates senior Stephen Allsop and sophomore Jose Fabara beat Antentor Hinton and CalvinBrooks (8-1).
Once singles play began, the Eagles maintained their dominance only dropping a set to Winston-Salem State. No. 5 singles student-athlete Chatman led the Eagles with the strongest play defeating Hinton, 6-0, 6-0. In addition to Chatman's stellar performance was Espitia's 6-1, 6-1 win over Odera.
Eagles' No. 1 Waissen defeated Coxton, 6-3, 6-3, No. 3 Fabara overpowered Hunter, 6-1, 6-3, and after a sluggish start Allsop defeated Mason King, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7).
N.C. Central 5, Shaw 2
As the Eagles moved into their second competition, the NCCU took on the 2008-2009 Central Intercollegiate Athlete Association Champions Shaw.
During doubles play the Eagles took a 1-0 advantage, the No. 2 doubles team Jackson/Chatman fell to Kalada Kienka and Milos Stankovic (8-5) following an opening win by No. 1 Waissen/Espitia over Fabio Falcato and Medhi Ben-Cheikh, 8-4.
The Eagles sealed the doubles victory with an 8-0 defeat over Antione Jacobs and Martin Fasion by Allsop/Fabara.
Transitioning into singles play did not slow the Eagles down, No. 1 Waissen began the wins for the Eagles with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 defeat over Falcato.
In a shaky moment for the Eagles, No. 2 Jackson and No. 3 Fabara suffered defeat to their Shaw competition, 6-1, 6-2; 6-0, 6-2, respectively.
Eagles' No. 4 Espitia picked up where Waissen left off defeating Ben-Cheikh 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6).
NCCU's No. 5 Chatman over powered Jacobs 6-2, 6-0. Closing out the singles play for the Eagles was No. 6 Allsop, crushing Faison 6-3, 6-1 for the match win.
The Eagles will head to Atlanta, Ga. to take on Kennesaw State and Morehouse Feb. 20-21.
