FARMVILLE, Va.- The North Carolina Central University baseball team took on Longwood University in a Thursday afternoon twinbill at Lancer Field, falling by a wide-margin in the afternoon's first game 15-1, and losing a lead late dropping game two 6-5. With the doubleheader sweep NCCU (4-19) is in the midst of an eight-game losing streak.
Game one saw Longwood come out with guns blazing racking up six runs off of six hits to grab an early 6-0 lead after the first. The Lancers added one more run to the scoreboard in the second, and seven more in the third to slam the door shut on any chance for an NCCU win in game one. After three innings Longwood led 14-0 behind 12 hits including four doubles by Lancer batters.
Longwood added its final run of the first game in the fourth taking a 15-0 lead heading down the backstretch. The Eagles avoided the shutout in the first game thanks to an RBI-single by junior Justin Goodson, ending the game 15-1.
Game two saw NCCU come out swinging early, on the heels of three straight singles by Oliver Jenkins, David Scott, and Blake Murray. Murray's single to right field bringing in Jenkins and putting up the game's first run and a 1-0 lead by NCCU. David Scott scored later in the top of the first on a throwing error putting the Eagles up 2-0 after one-half inning of play.
In the bottom half of the first, Longwood cut the deficit in half, on a Brant Jones RBI single to right-centerfield, edging the Lancers closer at 2-1. The Eagles battled right back one inning later in the third by adding two more runs on four hits. Both sophomore Edward Pegues and junior Kurt Wilson hit RBI singles to centerfield to give the Eagles a 4-1 advantage in the top of the third. The Lancers added a run in the bottom half of the third to find themselves down 4-2 after three complete innings.
NCCU added one more run to the board in the fourth thanks to a Oliver Jenkins double, and a David Scott RBI single, putting the Eagles up 5-2. That was the last run for NCCU on the day. Longwood stormed back with one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to take a 6-5 heading into the seventh inning.
The Lancers held the Eagles in check in the final frame, allowing only one runner to reach base, and held on for the 6-5 victory and the doubleheader sweep.
Despite the loss David Scott swung a hot bat for the Eagles in game two, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Scott is batting .500 in the last four contests going 7-for-14 with 2-RBI.
NCCU has a quick turnaround with the Trojans of Virginia State coming up tomorrow in Petersburg, Va. The last Eagle victory was a 4-3 decision over VSU back on March 25 with a 4-3 Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
