WILMINGTON, N.C.- The North Carolina Central University Eagles allowed 28 hits and committed eight combined errors falling in doubleheader action to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington 10-3, 14-0 at Brooks Field.
In game one, NCCU trailed 1-0 in the top of the fifth, when Eagle freshman Cedrick Coleman singled up the middle to lead off the frame. Robert Grant advanced Coleman to second on a sacrifice bunt, and freshman sensation Akeem Hood followed Grant's bunt with another single to center field advancing to second base on a throwing error by the Seahawks, putting runners at second and third with one out. Justin Goodson struck out, setting up David Scott's single to left center scoring both Coleman and Hood, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom-half of the fifth inning.
The bottom of the fifth saw the Seahawks roll up six runs on four hits, one of which included a three-run round- tripper by UNCW backstop David Shambley to put the Seahawks up 7-2 after five complete innings.
The visiting Eagles certainly kept plugging away scoring one more run in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as UNCW plated one run in the sixth, and two in the eighth to come away with the game one win 10-3.
NCCU junior pitcher Joseph Cobb (0-4) took the loss going 4.0 innings, surrendering five runs and walking five Seahawk batters. Freshman duo Hood and Coleman both went two-for-five at the plate, finishing with half of the team's eight hits.
In the day's second game UNCW took the lead early scoring runs in the first three innings to take an 8-0 lead, and never looked back. In the seven-inning affair, the Diamond Hawks scored its final six runs in the last two innings with four in the fifth and two in the sixth, sending the Eagles to its ninth straight loss.
Both NCCU freshman Jeremy Tillet and Timothy Rennard pitched 3.0 innings with Tillet giving up eight runs, and Rennard allowing the final six. Tillet (0-1) took his first career loss as an Eagle.
Once again, Akeem Hood went two-for-four in game two, finishing the doubleheader four-for-nine at the plate. NCCU freshman Anthony Wilson also had two hits in the loss going two-for-three. The six errors
The doubleheader sweep sends NCCU to 5-29 on the season, and the Eagles have a day off before heading to the other end of the Old North State to take on Appalachian State University on Thursday April 30 at 4:00 at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
