DURHAM, N.C. - Appalachian State University pounded out 24 hits, including 11 extra-base hits with five home runs, to earn a softball doubleheader sweep (18-1, 8-0) over North Carolina Central University on a hot Saturday afternoon at Southern High School in Durham, N.C.

In game one, ASU blew open a 2-0 contest after two innings of play by scoring five runs in the third frame, four runs in the fourth and seven runs in the fifth.

NCCU plated its lone run of the afternoon in fifth and final inning when senior first baseman Ashley Henderson hit a lead-off home run, the first round-tripper of the season for the Lady Eagles.

ASU senior Ashley Gaston drove in three runs, including a two-run blast in the fifth inning, and was one of five Mountaineers with a pair of hits in game one. Rookie catcher Lindsay Whitlock made the most of her one hit, which was a third-inning, three-run home run to finish with a team-best four RBI.

The visitors exploded for 15 hits, including five extra-base hits in the game one 18-1 victory.

Senior hurler Kayla Richardson scattered four hits with a pair of strikeouts in three innings of work to earn the victory.

NCCU sophomore outfielder Ashanti Stroud accounted for two of the Lady Eagles' seven hits in the opener.

In game two, ASU pitchers Ashley Stubbs and Teri Fister combined for the three-hit 8-0 shutout, with Stubbs coming away with the victory.

Sophia Blue, Michelle Ishida and Desanbra Franklin tallied the lone singles for NCCU (4-39) in the nightcap.

ASU's Katie Boyd, Morgan Price and Yancey Moose each recorded a double and a home run to power the ASU (25-25) offense, which totaled nine hits, including six extra-base hits with three home runs, in the game two win.

NCCU returns to the diamond on Tuesday (April 28) for its final home doubleheader of the season when the Lady Eagles host South Carolina State University at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C., starting at 1 p.m. Three NCCU seniors - Sophia Blue, Ashley Henderson and Ashley Shade - will be honored as part of Senior Day.
