NORFOLK, Va.- After having Tuesday's doubleheader against the Delaware State University Hornets cancelled because of inclement weather the North Carolina Central University Eagles took on the Norfolk State University Spartans on a cold and drizzly Wednesday afternoon twinbill at Marty L. Miller Field dropping both games 14-4 and 13-0.
The Eagles used the momentum from Monday's extra inning victory to start out game one with a 2-0 advantage thanks to a two-out rally that began with a walk by sophomore David Scott. NCCU first baseman Blake Murray followed that up with a single down the right field line advancing Scott to third. Monday afternoon's hero, Edward Pegues, loaded the bases on a walk, and junior Kurt Wilson reached on an error by NSU, sending both Murray and Scott home giving the Eagles the early 2-0.
NCCU sophomore pitcher Brandon Oatis looked strong from the get-go allowing no hits through the first two innings. The real trouble started in the bottom of the third and continued from there for the visiting Eagles. Norfolk State put up nine runs in the frame on seven hits, and one NCCU error. It was 9-2 NSU after three innings.
Norfolk State scored three runs in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth to win the game via the 10-run rule taking game one 14-4. Oatis (1-4) took the loss for the Eagles.
Game two was no different than the first. The Spartans showed their offensive prowess from the onset as NSU put two men on the base path with consecutive hits. The third batter Chris Joyce hit his third home run of the season over the left field wall putting NSU up 3-0 in the first. The Spartans added another run to end the first frame with a 4-0 lead.
Norfolk State (11-16) went on to score runs in every inning of the second contest en route to a 13-0 victory. NCCU (5-22) managed only two hits in the loss and committed three errors.
The Eagles move on from the twinbill sweep and get set to take on the Elon University Phoenix in a two-game set this weekend in Alamance County. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Latham Park on Friday.
