DURHAM, NC - The North Carolina Central University Eagles baseball team earned their fourth win of the season, as NCCU defeated the Trojans of Virginia State 4-3, on a cold and dreary Wednesday afternoon.
NCCU took the bait first in the second inning as bases were loaded. Edward Pegues walked to lead the inning off followed by two more base on balls by Anthony Wilson and David Scott. Pegues scored on a wild pitch. Wilson scored on an RBI single from Ross Plummer. The Eagles led 2-0.
In the third innings the Trojans loaded the bases on walks and a hit by pitch. A base on balls by Michael Knight allowed, Merv Woodlin to score. Then on the same play VSU capitalized on tying the game at two on as DeShawn Showell scored on a wild pitch. Woodlin then scored the third run for the Trojans as he was brought in on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Holt.
In the bottom half of the third inning NCCU Blake Murray stole second and third and then scored on a wild pitch by VSU, to knot the game at three all. The Eagles ended the inning with two left on.
It was a quick one, two, three inning for the Eagles defensively, in the top of the fourth. NCCU stopped VSU on a double play, a catch by Oliver Jenkins shut down the Trojans scoring opportunity.
NCCU would capitalize in the bottom of the fourth as Akeem Hood singled then advanced to second. Next batter Blake Murray advanced to second on an error by the shortstop, until Edward Pegues hit a shot in the right center field gap to score Hood.
NCCU would hold the Trojans scoreless as pitcher Brandon Strickland pitched a complete nine inning game. Strickland was outstanding as he allowed three runs, and struck out three.
The Trojans used four different pitchers in the game.
