Final Stats
SAVANNAH, Ga.- The North Carolina Central University Eagles were unable to avoid the weekend sweep due to six errors and just four hits on Sunday afternoon falling 12-1 to the Savannah State University Tigers at Tiger Field on Sunday.
NCCU came in to Sunday's affair looking to salvage one game in the series after letting both games get away on Saturday, and it certainly looked that way in the top of the first when Oliver Jenkins hit his second bomb of the weekend, putting the visiting Eagles up 1-0. NCCU did not get another hit until the fifth inning when freshman Akeem Hood hit an infield single.
With the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the second, Savannah State plated three runs because of two NCCU errors, while also adding two more to the scoreboard in the third thanks to consecutive hits by Savannah State's Johnathan Ross, and Andrew Mendez. Those two were brought around to score putting the Tigers up 5-1 after three innings.
SSU scored two more runs in the fourth inning because of two more Eagle errors to widen the margin to 7-1. The final blow came in the fifth inning when the Tiger bats really came to life. Three singles and an Andrew Mendez two-RBI double help put five more runs on the board giving the Tigers their final tally at 12-1. The game was called after seven innings and thus Savannah State got the weekend sweep and sent the Eagles to its sixth loss in a row.
Savannah State (12-11) managed to score in four consecutive innings to put NCCU away, and Tiger backstop Andrew Mendez shined the brightest for SSU going 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
The Eagles (3-11) have a short turnaround with the North Carolina A&T Aggies traveling to the Bull City for a Monday Night showdown at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 6:00 p.m. All NCCU baseball fans are encouraged to show their support. Admission at the DBAP is free.
