Final Stats

DURHAM, N.C.- The North Carolina Central University Eagles used solid pitching and provided just enough hitting to beat the Coppin State University Eagles 8-5 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday afternoon.

NCCU freshman Tim Rennard made his first start on the hill count, going six innings against Coppin State, giving up just two runs and striking out three batters to earn his first career win. NCCU sophomore catcher Robert Grant got the Eagles on the board with a two-RBI single to right field, in the second inning, followed by another RBI single in the fourth to put the Eagles up 3-0.

The fifth inning saw the home Eagles add three more runs to the board on the heels of four walks, and one wild pitch to vault NCCU to the 6-0 advantage.

In the seventh, Coppin State (0-5) put five runs on the board, including a clutch two-out three run double by Harry Williams, to cut the deficit to one. It took a clutch RBI triple by NCCU senior outfielder Oliver Jenkins along with a CSU throwing error that brought Jenkins home to put the visiting Eagles away for good.

NCCU freshman Brandon Strickland came on in relief to amass his second save of the season.

It's a short turnaround for NCCU (3-5) as the Camels of Campbell University are next on the slate. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the DBAP.

Admission is free for NCCU baseball fans at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
