SAVANNAH, Ga. - North Carolina Central University dropped two contests on Saturday as part of the Savannah State Classic. The NCCU Eagles lost the first game 14-1 against Norfolk State University, then suffered a 10-3 setback against event host Savannah State.
Norfolk State junior pitcher Quinn Bright amassed a career-high 10 strikeouts and held the Eagles to three hits for the complete game victory.
Greg Pickett, Kurt Wilson and Akeem Hood had the only hits for NCCU, with Hood scoring the lone run for the Eagles.
NCCU held a 1-0 lead going into the top of the third inning, but the Spartans plated 14 unanswered runs, including six in the seventh, for the 14-1 win.
In the nightcap for NCCU, Savannah State exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, all before Eagles starter Douglas Dalley could record the second out. The Tigers scored three more runs in the second for a comfortable 10-0 cushion.
NCCU managed three runs, including a solo blast off the bat of Blake Murray, who finished with two hits and a walk. Hood added a pair of singles and an RBI in the 10-3 loss.
NCCU brings a 0-3 record into a 4 p.m. contest at Davidson College on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
