FARMVILLE, VA - Freshman Chasidy Williams poured in a game-high 19 points, and helped North Carolina Central University win its 10th and final game of the 2008-09 season, as the Lady Eagles defeated Longwood University 71-66, in Willett Hall on Friday evening.
The win gives NCCU its first double digit win as a Division I member.
Williams was eight for 12 from the floor, and also had six rebounds for the Lady Eagles.
Three other Lady Eagles had a double-figures scoring night. Blaire Houston added 17 points LaVonna Hailey and Danielle DeBerry respectively had 16 and 12. DeBerry had a game high of seven rebounds.
The Lady Eagles led by as many as five points in the opening half and took a 28-25 edge into halftime.
With 13:01 left the in the second half the Lancers' Sierra Fletcher drained a three-pointer to close the Lady Eagles gap to one 38-37. NCCU however, retook the lead back up to 14 twice on a lay-up by Williams, with 6:39 remaining.
Longwood's Krystal Garrison hit two 3-pointer to cut the lead to four 56-52.
A jumper by NCCU's Houston and a mini Lady Eagles run quickly push the lead back into double digits.
The Lady Eagles led by at least five the rest of the way, before LU closed the deficit with less than 2:00 left in the game.
NCCU held LU to 38 percent shooting in the second half, The Lancers out rebounded the Lady Eagles 35-31.
Cierra Baker had 16 points to lead the Lancers. Garrison and Fletcher both added 12 points apiece.
