SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah State University scored four runs in the fifth inning to edge visiting North Carolina Central University, 7-6, in season-opening action for both teams on Friday in Savannah, Ga.
NCCU amassed 11 hits, including three off the bat of rookie outfielder Akeem Hood, compared to nine hits for the host Tigers. Hood's RBI triple in the third inning was one of four extra-base hits for the Eagles.
NCCU senior Robert Landis blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning, while junior Kurt Wilson had a pinch-hit, two-run double in the eighth inning to trim the deficit to just one run. Junior Justin Goodson had two hits and scored three runs for the Eagles.
Sophomore hurler Brandon Oatis started on the hill for NCCU, allowing five hits, four runs (three earned) and striking out seven batters in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
SSU starter Michael Allegritti picked up the win for Tigers, while NCCU relief pitcher James Jordan was credited with the loss.
SSU's Dexter Kelley hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh, which proved to be the game-winner.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 2:30 p.m., followed by NCCU's contest against Norfolk State at 11 a.m.
