WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University took North Carolina Central University to the wire, but the Lady Eagles prevail in a 68-66, victory over WSSU on Wednesday night in the C.E. Gaines Center.
At the 12:40 mark in the second half, a Blaire Houston's three pointer made LaVonna Hailey the All-Time leader in assists at NCCU. Hailey, a senior from Charlotte, NC finished the night with six assists. "It feels great!" said Hailey. "My teammates helped me out by making the baskets, and getting this victory," said Hailey.
In the final 2:00 minutes of the game the Lady Rams scored on a jumper to cut the lead to 67-66. However, NCCU (9-16) was able to play keep away until the Lady Rams committed a foul to send NCCU to the line. Hailey hit one of two from the free throw line edging the score 68-66.
With 20 seconds in the game, WSSU had a chance to go up by three or send the game into overtime, but Jordhan Peterson committed an offensive foul, turned the ball over and the Lady Eagles escapes in the Gaines Center.
NCCU had an eight point lead with 15:40 in the first half, but the Lady Rams cut the lead to one on a Peterson's lay-up. NCCU went into half time with a two point lead 30-28.
WSSU (2-20) led once in the entire game, but kept it close only being down by nine. The Lady Eagles shot 56 percent from the field and shot a blistering 62 percent from the charity stripe.
Chasidy Williams had a game-high of 26 points, while Houston dropped 16 points.
