POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Lamar Pittman, a 6-8, 230-pound power forward from Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., has signed a national letter of intent to attend North Carolina Central University and join the Eagles basketball program.
Pittman earned 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region XV Second Team honors after averaging 19.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest during his sophomore season at Dutchess C.C. His 19.1 points per game made Pittman the third leading scorer in the region.
"Lamar is a big, muscular inside player with the ability to contribute for us right away," said NCCU head coach Henry Dickerson. "He can step out and shoot the jump shot, plus he can post up and runs the floor real well.
"More importantly, Lamar is a very good student and a solid citizen," Dickerson added.
A native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Pittman was a double-double, all-league performer at his native Poughkeepsie High School for head coach Brian Laffin. Prior to his senior season in the summer of 2004, Pittman was one of 300 players invited to the prestigious Nike Camp in Indianapolis, Ind.
In his first college season (2006-07) at Dutchess C.C., Pittman averaged 12.7 points and 8.3 rebounds for the Falcons.
Among his top performances as a sophomore, Pittman amassed 31 points and 17 rebounds versus Kingsborough C.C. on Dec. 15, 2007, then scored a career-high 32 points against Technical Career Institute on Jan. 12.
"Lamar has very good athleticism, quickness and strength," said Dutchess C.C. head coach Peter Stefonowich. "He shoots the ball very well and has the ability to score in a variety of ways. He can step out and stretch the defense, which creates match-up problems for opposing teams at the power forward position."
Pittman joins four other signees as part of NCCU's recruiting class for the upcoming 2008-09 season. The other NCCU signees are Stevy Worah-Ozimo, a 6-10, 220-pound center from TCI College of Technology; Jamar Briscoe, a 5-10 point guard from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Baltimore, Md.; Dami Sapara, a 6-6 swing player from Charis Prep in Goldsboro, N.C.; and Nick Chasten, a 6-7 swing player also from Charis Prep.
