DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University head football coach Mose Rison has announced the addition of two coaches to the Eagles staff, defensive coordinator Jake Cabell and running backs coach Marcus Gladden.
"We are fortunate to have both of them as part of this football program," Rison said. "They coach with a great deal of enthusiasm and energy."
Cabell, a veteran defensive coach who played for and graduated from the University of Nebraska, will serve as NCCU's new defensive coordinator.
During his more than 30 years of coaching experience, Cabell has held positions at Texas Southern University (Defensive Coordinator; 2001), Tennessee State University (Defensive Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator, 1996-99), Iowa Wesleyan College (Defensive Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator/Strength and Conditioning Coach, 1995), Western Illinois University (Defensive Secondary Coach, 1993), Southwestern College (Head Coach, 1992), Oregon State University (Recruiting Coordinator, 1987-91), Eastern Washington University (Defensive Coordinator, 1980-87), and the University of Nebraska (Freshman Team Defensive Coordinator, 1977-80).
Cabell is no stranger to NCCU. He actually began his college career as an Eagle, attending NCCU during the 1972-73 academic year and starting as a freshman corner back for head coach George Quiett during the 1972 MEAC championship season.
Cabell left NCCU and earned an associate's degree from Ferrum College in 1974, before accepting a full scholarship to play corner back at the University of Nebraska. He went on to achieve both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Nebraska, in 1977 and 1979, respectively.
"Coach Cabell is a veteran football coach," Rison said. "He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this coaching staff. We were fortunate to be able to find him when we did."
Gladden, an alumnus of East Carolina University and native of Charlotte, N.C., is NCCU's new running backs coach.
Gladden joins the Eagles staff after two successful seasons (2006-07) as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern University. During his two years as secondary coach, the CSU defense amassed 29 interceptions, including a school record 18 picks in 2006.
Prior to Charleston Southern, Gladden held football coaching positions at Tennessee State (Defensive Backs/Tight Ends Coach, 2005), Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. (Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach, 2004), and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (Defensive Backs/Wide Receivers/Special Teams Coach, 2002-03).
He has also worked as strength and conditioning coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2001-02) and an exercise and sports science intern at his alma mater East Carolina University.
As an undergraduate, Gladden spent two seasons at Garden City (Kan.) Community College, where he was a defensive back and all-American sprinter before transferring to ECU. While in Greenville, N.C., he was a dual-sport letterwinner for the Pirates as a defensive back (1997-98) and an all-conference sprinter (1998-99), before graduating in 2000 with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science.
"Coach Gladden has been a defensive coach for a long time, but he has been around football and understands the game, so he knows both sides of the ball," Rison said. "He is going to be a big help with our running backs."
