PANTHERSVILLE, GA - North Carolina Central University surrendered three runs in the eighth inning as Georgia State University rallied for a 9-7 victory on Sunday at The Field in Panthersville, Ga.
The win secured a three-game weekend sweep for the host Panthers as they improve to 21-16 on the season. The visiting Eagles dropped to 6-25 in their first season of Division I competition.
On Sunday, NCCU scored the game-tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh without a hit. Georgia State pitchers walked four straight then hit a batter to put the visitors ahead 7-6.
The Panthers responded in the bottom of the eighth when Mike McCree belted a pinch-hit, two-out RBI double to tie the score. Two batters later, Bradley Logan drove in two runs with a double to win the game for GSU.
Logan also blasted a three-run home run in the fifth that tie the game, as the sophomore first baseman finished the contest going 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored to top Georgia State.
NCCU was paced by Tye Gray, who went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Rookie Blake Murray added a double with three RBI and a run scored for the Eagles.
On Saturday, Georgia State swept the doubleheader by scores of 12-4 and 14-0.
In the first game, Gray highlighted the Eagles' offense with a two-run home run to left center in the ninth inning.
Oliver Jenkins and Greg Pickett had two hits each for the Eagles in the nightcap.
Up next for NCCU, the Eagles travel to UNC Wilmington on Wednesday, April 23, for a 7 p.m. game.
