CARY, N.C. - North Carolina Central University split a softball doubleheader (2-1, 0-9) with rival Winston-Salem State University on Wednesday at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
In the opener, every inning was dominated by the pitchers as both NCCU's Kristen Schooler and Winston-Salem State's Amber Shore prevented either offense from getting on track. Schooler faced 27 batters, only giving up one run. Shore, on the other hand, gave up two runs on three hits and struck out 10 batters.
The Lady Eagles broke through in the first inning. Sophia Blue got things going after getting hit by the Rams pitcher. Blue advanced to third base when Michelle Ishida singled, and then reached second.
Lady Eagles catcher Francheska Pittman drove Blue home with an RBI single to right field. Ishida scored the Lady Eagles second run on a wild pitch.
The Rams threatened in the top of the second, but it was not enough as the Lady Eagles defense took over.
WSSU was able to manufacture a run with a double and a couple of ground outs. That's all Schooler would allow as she went seven strong innings for NCCU earn the win, 2-1.
In game two, it was all WSSU. The Rams scored in every inning except the fifth, including four runs in the sixth. Kendell Sutton went 2-for-2 with a triple and a double with one run scored and four RBIs on the day. Amber Shore went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. WSSU provided pitcher Ashley Boswell with all of the offense she needed as Boswell tossed a three-hit shutout on the day as NCCU fell 9-0.
