WILMINGTON, N.C. - North Carolina Central University dropped a softball doubleheader at UNC-Wilmington on Saturday with a 15-6 loss in game one and a 8-0 shutout in the nightcap.
In game one, the Seahawks flew out to an early lead by scoring seven runs in the first inning. Only two of those runs were earned, as a throwing error allowed five unearned runs to cross the plate.
UNCW scored once more in the second frame to take an 8-0 lead.
NCCU exploded in the third inning with six runs on two hits, a run-scoring triple by Sophia Blue and an RBI single by Ashley Henderson. Four other runs scored courtesy of two Seahawk errors to cut the margin to 8-6.
UNCW responded with two runs in the bottom half of the third inning, then five more in the fourth to put the game away.
Morgan Walters went 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles to top the Seahawks, while Meghan Murray collected four RBI. Brittney Lehrschall scattered four hits and struck out six batters to earn the victory.
Henderson had two singles and was the lone Lady Eagle with more than one hit.
In game two, UNCW pitcher Amanda Aditays tossed a two-hit shutout to pick up an 8-0 victory. Offensively, the Seahawks were sparked by Carley Hughes with a pair of three-run home runs.
Jennifer Langston and Kristina Williams accounted for NCCU's two hits.
NCCU's scheduled doubleheader against North Carolina A&T on Sunday in Cary, N.C., has been postponed due to poor field conditions caused by heavy rain. The games have not been rescheduled at this time.
