The Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University defeated arch rival North Carolina A&T State University 4-1 in the first game of a twin-bill on Saturday afternoon. The win gave the Lady Eagles a split in the afternoon softball encounter, as the Aggies won the second game 12-1.
NCCU started the game as leadoff hitter Sophia Blue singled up the middle, stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. She came home on a double by Michelle Ishida.
The big blow came off the bat of Kristen Schooler, who laced a two-run homer to left field to score Kristina Delgado in the bottom of the second. The two-run burst gave the Lady Eagles a 3-1 lead over the Aggies.
Blue, then scored for the second time of the first game as she touched home plate following on an error by the Aggies.
Schooler earned her first win of the season as she pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out two Aggies batters.
The second game was a different story. NCCU never got started offensively. NCA&T pitcher Jen Luper surrendered only four hits and one run to the hosts.
The Aggies got out of the gate quickly and never looked back. NCAT put up two runs in the first inning, two more in the second, and an additional five runs in the third inning.
The Lady Eagles only run came in the bottom of the first inning when Blue came home on a sacrifice fly from Ishida.
The Aggies added two more runs in the forth and one in the fifth to put the Lady Eagles away by a final score of 12-1.
Ishida was the losing pitcher for NCCU, while Luper got the win for the Aggies.
