DURHAM, N.C. - Chowan University held North Carolina Central University to only seven hits during the Hawks' doubleheader sweep (10-1, 9-0) of the host Eagles at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, Chowan rookie first baseman Billy Walling led the way by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a home run for two RBI and two runs scored. Senior shortstop P.J. Sadler also belted a home run for the Hawks, while freshman Zack Beasley had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman pitcher Brandon Kelly scattered four hits in five innings of work with two strikeouts to earn the victory for Chowan.
NCCU was topped by sophomore Tye Gray with a pair of singles and a run scored.
NCCU committed five errors in game one, while the Hawks amassed 11 hits, including three doubles and two home runs.
Game two belonged to Chowan freshman hurler B.J. Byerly, who threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout with five strikeouts. Byerly, who carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, faced 22 batters, only one over the minimum.
NCCU's lone hit came off the bat of junior Robert Landis with one out in the fifth frame.
The Eagles committed four errors in the second game, resulting in five unearned runs.
Chowan's offense was sparked by Justin Hollingsworth, Walling and Nate Stanton, who all had two hits, including a double.
Chowan improves its record to 17-10, while NCCU drops to 4-15.
NCCU hosts Saint Augustine's College on Sunday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
