CARY, N.C. - North Carolina Central University scored seven runs in the first two innings of game one to earn a 10-6 victory during a doubleheader split (10-6, 3-8) with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday (March 19) at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.
The game one win was the first for NCCU as a Division I softball program.
In the opener, NCCU pitcher Stacey Greene allowed three first inning runs on one hit, three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
The host Lady Eagles responded by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the first to even the score.
Greene settled down after her teammates scored four times in the second inning and three more times in the fourth frame. The junior hurler scattered seven hits and struck out five Hawks in the complete game victory.
NCCU was topped by rookie shortstop Ashanti Stroud with two hits and three runs batted in. Michelle Ishida, Francheska Pittman and Ashley Henderson all contributed two hits and two RBI for the victors.
UMES junior Kendra Saunders had a two-run home run and freshman Ashley Stewart had a pair of singles to pace the Hawks.
In game two, UMES broke open a 1-1 tie by scoring three runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to cruise to an 8-3 win.
Sophomore pitcher Mishayla Truttman amassed eight strikeouts in the complete game victory for UMES (4-10).
The Hawks were sparked offensively by Chelsea Logan with three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Saunders added two hits, including a three-run home run to put the game out of reach in the fourth inning.
Junior infielder Sophia Blue scored all three runs for NCCU (1-24) after reaching on two singles and a triple. Jennifer Langston and Henderson each collected two hits and an RBI.
NCCU returns to action on Friday (March 21) with a doubleheader versus Lenoir-Rhyne at Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C. starting at 1 p.m.
