CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina Central University suffered a 9-0 setback to Kent State University in its first game as an NCAA Division I program during the 2008 Carolina Classic on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Kent State freshman pitcher Markie Pozzuto tossed a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts to earn the win in her first college appearance.

NCCU junior Sophia Blue was the lone Lady Eagle to reach base. Blue led off the bottom of the first inning with a two base error and advanced to third on one of her two stolen bases. She was hit by a pitch in her second at-bat in the third inning.

Kent State freshman infielder Jessica Carmichael went 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, a double and five runs batted in. Freshman Ashlee Hein also belted a two-run home run for the victors.

NCCU sophomore hurler Kristen Schooler surrendered 10 hits and five earned runs in four-and-a-third innings of action in the loss.

NCCU (0-1) returns to action on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against East Carolina. On Saturday, the Lady Eagles play George Washington at 12:30 p.m. and tournament host North Carolina at 3:00 p.m.
