SAVANNAH, GA -- North Carolina Central University opened its inaugural season as a Division I program by dropping a doubleheader to Savannah State University (17-3, 6-4) on Sunday.
NCCU committed six errors and managed only four hits, scoring their runs on a three-run home run by rookie shortstop Marcus Fuller in the top of the seventh inning.
After going hitless in the first inning, Savannah State pounded out 14 hits, including three doubles and four home runs in the seven-inning 17-3 victory.
In game two, NCCU plated two runs, including a solo blast by rookie catcher Robert Grant, in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Tigers responded by tying the contest in the bottom half of the fifth, then scoring twice in the sixth before the umpires called the game due to darkness.
