UMES OVERCOMES SECOND HALF DEFICIT TO DEFEAT NCCU, 71-66

DURHAM, NC - The Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore defeated the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University, 71-66 in McLendon-McDougald Gym, on Friday night.

NCCU (2-10) led as much as 10 points in the first half on a Danielle DeBerry jumper with 5:44 remaining. The Hawks went on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to one going into intermission, 39-38.

NCCU shot 42 percent from the field and 76 percent from the charity stripe. UMES shot 49 percent from the field, and shot 43 percent from three-point range.

With 19:23 left in the second half, UMES Tiffany Reid connected on a three-pointer to lead the Hawks 43-41, until Chasidy Williams made a lay-up to tie the game at 43.

NCCU went on a mini-run to go up six points, and that was the last lead the Lady Eagles would see. The Hawks tied the game at 51 on a three-pointer by Reid, and a jumper by April McBride gave the Hawks a two-point lead at 7:53 in the contest.

The Lady Eagles narrowed the UMES lead to three with 1:18 remaining in the second half, but a 5-0 run by UMES gave them an eight point lead, their largest of the game.

Jori Nwachukwu led NCCU with 22 points and eight rebounds. Blaire Houston and DeBerry both helped out NCCU, scoring 13 and 11 points respectively.

The Hawks had four people in double figures. Reid led the team with 18 points, connecting on 4-of-8 from behind the arch. April McBride, Kanzes Battin and Casey Morton all helped UMES in the victory, scoring 14, 12, and 10 respectively.
