SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - North Carolina Central University failed to score during a six-minute stretch in the first half as Jackson State University tallied 16 unanswered points and cruised to a 69-49 victory over the Eagles in the 2008 South Padre Island Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

NCCU (0-6) flew out to a 7-4 lead in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the contest, but the Eagles did not light the scoreboard again until a jumper by sophomore Vincent Davis at the 9:40 mark.

During that time NCCU committed seven turnovers, while Jackson State rolled off 16 consecutive points to take a 20-7 lead after a three-pointer by Daniel Huggins at 11:03.

The Tigers extended their advantage by going on a 16-7 run to push the margin to 36-14 on a long range basket by Chris Hyche with only 43 seconds left in the first stanza.

NCCU rookie guard Jamar Briscoe hit a pair of free throws before intermission to make the deficit 36-16 at the break.

NCCU played even with JSU in the second half, but the damage was already done.

Jackson State (1-5) out-rebounded the Eagles 40-29 and the Tigers shot 44.4 percent from the field (24-of-54), compared to just 29.4 percent (15-of-51) for NCCU.

In the critical first half, the Eagles turned the ball over 13 times and shot just 19.0 percent from the floor (4-of-21).

NCCU was topped by Briscoe with a game-high 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, but the rookie shot 5-for-21 from the field and had six turnovers.

Davis was the only other Eagle to net double figures with 10 points. In two games on South Padre Island, Davis amassed 25 points, nine steals, eight rebounds, five blocked shots and two assists to earn All-Tournament Team honors.

NCCU junior center Stevy Worah-Ozimo contributed eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Four Tigers reached double-digits in the scoring column, led by Darrion Griffin with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Maxey Grant, the Pre-Season SWAC Player of the Year, posted 13 points and six boards for JSU.

After opening the season with six straight road games, NCCU will host High Point University on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. inside McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
