GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Lady Pirates of East Carolina sunk the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University 98-39, in the first game of the Lady Pirate Invitational, in Minges Coliseum on Friday night.

NCCU was the first to score when LaVonna Hailey hits a jumper to lead 2-0. Allison Spivey hits a three-pointer to put ECU up 3-2. A 5-1 run by the Lady Pirates gave them an 8-3 advantage with 15 minutes left but the teams traded points, keeping the Eagles within six at 14-9. From there, East Carolina took over the next two minutes, scoring nine-straight to extend its lead to 23-9.

NCCU had a spark outscoring ECU 9-7 on a three pointer from Latoya Bennett, as the shot clock was winding down to cut the lead 38-15. ECU went into the locker room leading 40-19 at halftime.

ECU came out in the second half, on a 14-4 run to take a commanding 57-23 lead. The Lady Pirates would keep shooting the ball well while playing solid defense, to give them their largest advantage to that point, 71-27, with 11 minutes left in the game.

NCCU shot 31 percent for the game, and was outrebounded 48-25, committing 33 turnovers.

The Lady Eagles were led by freshman guard Blaire Houston scored 10 points and grab four steals. Freshman Genevieve Hyman scored eight for NCCU.

NCCU will play the loser of the Buffalo/N.C. A&T in the Lady Pirate Invitational consolation on Saturday, at 5:00 p.m.
