BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb cruised to a 73-60 over North Carolina Central University, Saturday evening in Paul Porter Arena.
The Lady Eagles got on the board quickly as they forced a turnover and scored the first points of the game on a lay-up by Jori Nwachukwu.
NCCU (0-4) lead 6-2 with 17:21, but the Bulldogs quickly caught up to tie the game six all.
GWU stretched its lead to six, 32-26, with 4:55 to play as Laura Povilonyte hits a jumper. Two quick jumpers by LaVonna Hailey, close the gap as the Lady Eagles went into intermission being down by five, 30-35.
In the second half, a lay-up by Blaire Houston the Lady Eagles cut the led to three, but that was as close NCCU would get.
From there, GWU (2-1) would keep at least a 13-point advantage the rest of the way and twice gained a 16-point lead in the contest.
Nwachukwu led all scorers with 26 points, and grabbed nine rebounds. Chasidy Williams was three for four from the field, as well as from the free throw to score nine points.
For the game, the Lady Eagles shot 43 percent hitting 27 out of 50, and 60 percent from the free throw. The Bulldogs grabbed 42 while NCCU had 27.
The Lady Eagles returns to action on Wednesday night as they travel to Athens, Ga. to take on the University of Georgia. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
