DURHAM, N.C. - The Lady Bears of Morgan State roared and spoiled NCCU home-opener by defeating the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University 63-53, Monday night at the McLendon-McDougald Gym.
At the beginning of the tip, the Lady Bears jumped out to a 10-1 with 15:30 left in the first half.
The Lady Bears scored the game's first seven points and held their largest lead of the first half of 13 points. A three-pointer by Morgan State's Erin Hawkins with 13:08 remaining gave the Lady Bears a 16-3 lead. NCCU pulled within seven points after a jumper by freshman Chasidy Williams with 3:35 left to make it a 25-18 game.
Morgan State (3-0) would extend its lead to as much as 12 points before taking a 33-24 advantage at the intermission.
Williams would hit a jumper with 17:20 to cut the Lady Bear lead 35-28. Morgan State's Corin Adams would later connect on her third straight three-pointer of the game, making it a 60-46 the Lady Bears biggest lead of the game with 4:25 left in the contest.
NCCU dominated the glass by grabbing 41 boards to MSU's 36, but turned the ball over 19 times to Morgan's 13. In the second half, shooting between both teams was 44 percent.
The Lady Eagles (0-2) were led by Williams and Blaire Houston, who both tallied a team-high 15 points. Jori Nwachukwu added 10 points and Latoya Bennett grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for NCCU.
Up next, the Lady Eagles will travel to Blacksburg, Va to take on the Hokies of Va. Tech. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
