WASHINGTON, DC - The Eagles of North Carolina Central University battled the Bison of Howard University in the nation's capital, but dropped the match 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-20) on Tuesday night.
In set three, however, the Eagles were determined not to go down with a fight. NCCU head coach Georgette Crawford-Crooks used her second string line-up to slow down Bison attack.
NCCU led the third set 7-4 after a pair of service aces by Nadia Hayes. Back-to-back kills by the Bison and an Eagle error allowed Howard to regain the advantage, 10-9. NCCU closed the gap and tied the set 12-12 before falling 25-20.
NCCU had a hitting percentage of .060 for the match, with only 22 kills on 83 attempts. Avaniki Campbell led the Eagles with eight kills, while Hayes contributed seven kills. Ashley Shade distributed a team-high 17 assists. On the defensive side of the ball, Kristan Fields topped NCCU with nine digs.
The Bison were led by Gabrielle Martin with nine kills. Grace Demichelis had a match-high 30 assists.
