Freshman Amy Dodd led a very balanced High Point attack on Saturday night as the High Point University women's basketball team defeated North Carolina Central, 57-40.
Dodd scored a team-high 10 points for HPU (7-7). Jennifer Long added nine while Andrea Tucker had eight. Ten players entered the game for the Panthers and all tallied points in the win.
For the Eagles (2-16) Latoya Bennett led the way recording a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Angelica Boles added 11 points.
High Point controlled the game from the opening tip with Dodd hitting a jumper on the first possession of the game. NCCU would keep the game close in the six minutes of the game, but would never overcome the Panthers. HPU took a seven point lead at the 10:06 mark off a jumper from Samuels. The Eagles' Bennett would respond with a jumper of her own to cut the lead back to five, but the Panthers would hold the Eagles scoreless over the next five minutes and jump out to a 15 point advantage (27-12) with 3:52 remaining in the opening period. Central would finally end its scoring drought, scoring on the next possession with a lay-up from Boles. The Panthers took a 31-18 advantage into the break.
Coming out of the intermission High Point would take its largest lead of the game up to that point, going up 16 at the 14:30 mark off a lay-up from Tucker. NCCU would not go away and went on a 10-3 run to close the lead to single digits (42-33) with 9:23 remaining. That is as close as the Eagles would come. High Point outscored NCCU 15-7 to close out the game and seal the victory.
The Panthers owned the paint pulling down 41 rebounds to just 33 by NCCU. High Point also had 34 points in the paint to just 18 from the Eagles.
