DURHAM, N.C. - For the fourth time in the past six weeks, the North Carolina Central University men's and women's cross country teams have won their respective events. On Saturday (Oct. 13), NCCU swept the competition in the annual NCCU Eagle Classic at Forest Hills Park in Durham, N.C.
The NCCU women cruised to victory with only 16 team points, followed by second place North Carolina A&T State University (57 points), and third place Livingstone College (81 points). The Lady Eagles placed five of the top six finishers, including the first four runners to cross the finish line. NCCU's Desinia Johnson won the women's 5k event with a time of 20:24.22, while teammates Ashley Cooke placed second (20:27.50), Aisha Brown third (20:37.27), and Latanya Lesine fourth (20:37.56).
The NCCU men placed first with 28 team points, followed closely by second place North Carolina A&T (33 points), and third place Livingstone (85 points). Three Eagles were among the top four finishers with Brandon Jones placing second (25:04.96), James Kukat third (25:12.68) and Rashaad Lee fourth (25:22.44).
North Carolina A&T's Rashad Burnette won the men's 6k race with a time of 24:21.18.
Both NCCU squads were also victorious at the Greensboro Invitational on Sept. 29, the Old North State Championships in Greensboro, N.C. on Sept. 22, and the UNC Pembroke Invitational on Sept. 8.
