Rogers and Sakharova Notch Doubles Win in NCCU’s Opener at PC

BOX SCORE

CLINTON, S.C. — Senior Jamie Rogers and freshman Polina Sakharova claimed a doubles win for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team in a season-opening 7-0 loss to Presbyterian College on Saturday at the Templeton Tennis Courts.

The Blue Hose won the other two doubles matches and all six singles matches to complete the sweep.

It was the season-opening dual match for both programs.

Rogers and Sakharova, who went 4-2 paired together in a pair of tournaments in the fall, got in the win column to start the spring from the middle doubles court. The new NCCU doubles duo needed a 7-3 tiebreaker to win their showdown, 7-6, over senior Demi Henschel and freshman Samantha Calais.

PC (1-0) won the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles bouts by scores of 6-2 and 6-1, respectively, to garner the first team point.

Rogers gave NCCU its best chance at a single win from atop the lineup by forcing a third-set superset tiebreaker. Senior Brittany Nuttall held off the comeback attempt by Rogers to prevail 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3).

The Blue Hose won the other five singles contests in straight sets.

Sakharova, freshman Maru Berghaus and sophomore transfer Sofia Miller all made their dual-match debuts for the maroon and gray.

NCCU (0-1) next visits East Carolina University (Greenville, N.C.) in a rescheduled match on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. The Eagles were scheduled to play Wofford College on Sunday, Jan. 28, but the non-conference match has been cancelled due to an inclement weather forecast.
