NCCU’s Gabriel and Pena Net Wins against Campbell

DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Jasmine Gabriel and freshman Emily Pena produced a pair of victories for host North Carolina Central University in a 5-2 women's tennis dual-match loss to Campbell University on Saturday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
 
The wins were the first of the season for both Gabriel and Pena.
 
Campbell (3-5 Overall) won doubles and then prevailed at the first, second, fourth and fifth slots in the singles lineup to snap a four-match losing streak.
 
Gabriel won in straight sets, knocking off freshman Alexandra Nicoara by a 7-5, 6-3 margin on the third court. Pena lost her first set, but was leading in the second when sophomore Isabel Boada retired due to injury. The 3-6, 2-1 (ret.) win is the first collegiate victory for Pena.
 
The Camels won the first and third doubles matches, 6-4 and 6-2, to claim the first team point.
 
Sophomore No. 1 Alexandra Andrivot, sophomore No. 4 Pauline Roustan and junior No. 5 Nina Asanin all won in straight sets to clinch the team triumph for Campbell.
 
In the tightest showdown of the day, Campbell freshman Lea Cutura outlasted NCCU junior Jamie Rogers in three sets. Rogers, who has lost three of her last four matches in three sets, won the opening stanza before Cutura rallied for the 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-2 comeback win.
 
NCCU (0-6) begins a five-match road swing with a visit to Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Noon.
