William "Wigg" Springfield, shortstop for the renaissance Eagles, was a .300 hitter for three seasons and in 1948 hit five home runs in five at-bats against Howard University. He had a lengthy professional baseball career; including the honor of becoming (in the 1950s) the first black American manager of a major league franchised team, in Columbus, Ga. His professional playing career ended in 1961 (as a member of the Charlotte Hornets), but he played semi-pro ball for six more years.
