William L. Hayes came to North Carolina College in 1961 as one of the most outstanding athletes in the history of Durham’s Hillside High School, where he lettered for three years in football, basketball and track; served as captain of the football and basketball teams; and won state championships in the discus and shot put. He was also a first team All-State football player, captain of the North Carolina Shrine Bowl team, and winner of Hillside’s Best All-Around Athlete Award.
At North Carolina College he played varsity football for four years and competed with the track team for two. In football he won the Outstanding Freshman Award, the Sophomore of the Year Award, the Team MVP and Most Outstanding Player awards, and the Leadership Trophy. He also picked up Small College All-America honors in three seasons.
His outstanding career as a college head coach began with a flourish. He assumed the role at Winston-Salem State University in 1976; by 1977 he had picked up the first of his selections as Coach of the Year, by both the CIAA sports writers and the CIAA coaches, as well as other organizations, including the NAIA District 26, the Mutual Black Network, and Division II, Region III of the NCAA.
