W. Vashon Eagleson coached everything the Eagles played from 1921 until Leo Townsend became coach. He was employed as a teacher of chemistry, biology, and physics. Coaching was "on the side," according to his widow, Mrs. Frances Eagleson. During those early days no public transportation was available. Players were fed before they left the campus, and again when they returned the same evening. There were certainly no athletic scholarships: no one was paid for coaching: and players and other men students had themselves cleared the fields on which they played.
