As Chancellor of North Carolina Central University from 1986 to 1991, Dr. Tyronza R. Richmond paid particular attention to the traditions of athletic excellence which have long characterized the university.
At his request, a resolution of the North Carolina Central University Board of Trustees formalized the relationship of the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame to the institution, assuring the continuity of the program with continued recognition of outstanding players, coaches and contributors.
Chancellor Richmond also initiated action to rename the football stadium and the gymnasium as memorials to two members of this Hall of Fame. The Eagles now play home football games in the O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, which now bears the name of the late Coach Herman H. Riddick, and NCCU’s basketball teams host their games in the McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium, memorializing Coach John B. McLendon.
