Tony Medlin, now in his 20th season with the National Football League’s Chicago Bears and his 10th as the team’s award-winning head equipment manager, got his start at North Carolina Central University.
A 1982 NCCU graduate with a degree in therapeutic recreation, Medlin spent his student days as the equipment manager for the football and basketball teams. After graduation, he was hired as NCCU’s head equipment manager, where he stayed until leaving for the N.F.L. in 1987.
After the 2000 season, Medlin received the Whitey Zimmerman Award as the N.F.L.’s top equipment manager. Two seasons earlier, he was selected to coordinate the game ball operations for Super Bowl XXXIII and has done so for the last eight years.
Medlin and his wife, Chandra, have one daughter, Brandy. His numerous charitable endeavors are highlighted by his role as the chairman of the annual Chicago Bears Coat Drive. He is also involved with the “Say No to Drugs” campaign and the American Cancer Society.
