Sandra T. Shuler, who holds the bachelor of science and master of science degrees from North Carolina Central University, served as director of the Women’s Athletic Association from 1966 to 1974, and as coordinator of women’s athletics from 1974 to 1980.
In 1973, she was responsible for coordinating the transition from the Women’s Athletic Association to intercollegiate athletics for women at NCCU. She became associate director of athletics in 1980. In 1974, she coached NCCU’s first intercollegiate volleyball team, and held that post until retiring at the close of the 1993 season. She also served for one year as head softball coach. She was cheerleader advisor and chaperone from 1966 to 1979.
She held a variety of key posts in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, including vice president and women’s coordinator of the CIAA, and president of the CIAA Volleyball Coaches. She also played a key role on the NCAA’s Special Subcommittee on Opportunities for Minorities.
