R.O. MASON was held in high regard on and off the football field at North Carolina College. He was an outstanding student and feared for his blocking skills by opposing defenses. He was selected as the football team’s most valuable player in 1950, received the best blocker award in 1951, and was elected team captain in 1952, when he was also named to the All-CIAA second team and won honorable mention for an All-American selection.

A 1954 graduate of North Carolina College, Mason also holds his master’s degree.

In Gastonia, he has been a Principal of the Year, and the winner of the GCOCC Community Service Award. He was named Las Amigos Outstanding Educator in 1991. He is a member of Gastonia’s Central City Committee and Community Development Committee, a member of the board of directors of the Gaston Boys Club, president of Les Grands Messieurs Club, a deacon and the treasurer of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, and a member of Epsilon Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which named him Omega Man of the Year in 1966 and 1982.
