Norman W. Tate competed in track for NCCU from 1961 to 1965 and continued to compete in track through 1975.
At NCCU he was CIAA champion in the long jump and triple jump in 1963. 1964, and 1965; NAIA champion in both events in 1964 and 1965: NCAA College Division triple jump champion in 1963. 1964, and 1965; NCAA College division long jump champion in 1964 and 1965; NCAA University Division triple jump champion in 1963; Penn Relay champion in the triple jump in 1964 and 1965, in the long jump in 1963, 1964, and 1965. He was the Penn Relays Outstanding Athlete in 1964, the NAIA Outstanding Athlete in 1965; and a NCAA AIL American Selection in 1963, 1964, and 1965. He also ran on award winning relay teams for Coach LeRoy T. Walker, and was in 1964 a member of the sprint medley relay team that won the National AAU Championship and set a new world indoor record.
He was a member of the U.S. National track team in 1963, 1966, 1969, 1970, and 1971 and represented the U.S. in the Mexico City Olympic Games in 1966. He has since graduation held AAU national championships in both the long and triple jump, and was several years an open division winner in one or the 'other event in the Penn Relays. Tate was a part of the professional track tour of the International Track Association from 1973 to 1975. His career best marks are 27' 1" in the long jump, 55' in the triple jump, 10.2 seconds in the 100 meter sprint, and 20.4 seconds in the 200 meter sprint.
